A small lack to the upper right corner of the first cover of the first volume which has another to the upper right corner of the second cover, small lacks to the foot of the spines, some foxing affecting mainly the edges.
Autograph inscription signed by Ernest Grasset, on the half-title page of the first volume, to the inspector general of Ponts et Chaussées monsieur Thouvenot.
Copy complete with the second volume entitled "Les hommes" which is almost always missing.

Half navy blue sheep binding, smooth spine decorated with double gilt fillets, marbled paper boards, marbled endpapers and pastedowns, contemporary binding.
Some foxing, gift inscription from a previous owner on the half-title page.
