First edition, second issue with cancel title page, rare, published anonymously by the author. Title mark with sphere.
Contemporary full brown sheep binding. Spine with raised bands decorated with 5 fleurons and dotted pattern. Brown morocco title-label. Upper headcap worn. Loss at tail. Upper joint cracked at head and tail. Lower joint narrowly cracked at head. Rubbing.
A theatrical work that constitutes a curiosity, with both mythological and utopian subject matter. The action takes place in Colchis, land of the ancient Amazons, under Turkish rule. The Amazons seek to free themselves from the grand lord who dominates them, but in this war, there is neither death nor battle, the only weapons available to the Amazons being love and intoxication. The play contains numerous notes on mythology and is accompanied by relatively fanciful dissertations on the discovery of the New World by Hercules, the origins of chivalry among the Amazons and the Greeks. Interesting and astonishing.
