    As it was never ratified, this concordat never came into effect, and France therefore remained under the regime of the Concordat of 1801 until the Law on the Separation of Church and State in 1905.

    First edition of the illustrated French translation, with a folding map (cf. Sabin 5568).

    Only three copies recorded in the French Union Catalogue (BnF, Ministère des Affaires étrangères, Draguignan).

    Contemporary-style half calf, smooth spine rubbed, joints split at head and foot, marbled paper boards, marbled endpapers and pastedowns, marbled edges, in a slightly later binding.

    Light foxing, a paper flaw in the right margin of the final leaf not affecting the text.

    It should be noted that the translator mistook the genitive form for part of the author’s surname, spelling it “Birkbecks”.

    Bradel binding in full old rose cardboard, smooth spine faded, navy shagreen title-label, scuffs to boards, corners slightly bumped, yellow edges, contemporary binding.
    Ink stains on the first endpaper and the following two pages diminishing until they disappear, another affecting the third opuscule on most pages, another ink stain affecting more lightly at foot and without touching the text the pages of the second opuscule, scattered foxing.
    Rare collection of texts defending or demolishing Chateaubriand's political action during the years from 1816 to 1818.

    Contemporary temporary wrappers in bluish paper. Lacking paper on spine, with exposed signatures.

    The printed copies sold quickly, with a decree condemning the work to be destroyed and the author accused. The work begins with a plea in favor of press freedom, and is primarily summarized by the demand for unity between the people and the government. The author accuses public authorities, deputies, and police of tyranny, supporting his argument with history and sound common sense.
