George CRUIKSHANK, [Pierce EGAN attribué à]
Real life in London or, The Rambles and Adventures of Bob Tallyho, Esq. and His Cousin, the Hon. Tom Dashall, through the Metropolis
Jones & co|London 1821 - 1822|13 x 21.50 cm|2 volumes reliés
First edition illustrated with 32 plates including 2 frontispieces and 2 engraved titles by George Cruikshank, engraved in aquatint by Brooke, Rowlandson and hand-painted (watercolored). First issue, without the footnote on page 9. The table of plates correctly lists 32 plates. 3 leaves of music.
Half-cherry red glazed calf binding with corners ca 1870. Spine with raised bands richly decorated with leaves and flowers, roulettes at head and foot. Tobacco calf title-label, dark green calf volume label. Lower joints of volumes 1 and 2 with some cracking and rubbing, but joints solid and consistent. A small fragment missing from the head of volume II. A fine copy.
In many respects, the work is a guide to London, but it is also a satirical novel that presents life in London through the adventures of 3 characters, Tom Corinthian, Jerry Hawthorne and Bob Logic. The three companions thus visit many places in London, their perception being influenced by their social rank. Real life in London is in fact a sequel and imitation of Life in London by Pierce Egan, whose author is unknown. The work, in a comic vein, had great popular success; much more significant than its model: Life in London.
