James Bruce can be considered one of the very first scientific explorers on earth: it was indeed with great rigor that he amassed precise knowledge about geography, fauna and flora, meteorology... Furthermore Le Voyage aux sources du Nil is certainly one of the finest travel narratives about Africa. The first volumes are devoted to customs, commerce, and institutions; the last volume deals with natural history.
