QUINTILIEN
Institutionum oratorium libri duodecim
Apud Jacobum Estienne|Parisiis [Paris] • (Paris) 1715|9 x 17 cm|2 volumes reliés
Edition produced by Charles Rollin under the direction of Jacques Estienne, with notes and commentary by Charles Rollin.
Contemporary full brown sheep binding. Decorated spine with raised bands. Red morocco title-label. Headcaps slightly worn. Rubbing. 6 corners bumped. Pale yellow dampstain in margin of certain leaves in volume 2, extending into the text. Rather good copies, fresh.
The Institutio Oratoria is Quintilian's fundamental work. It goes beyond the framework of a rhetoric manual and has durably influenced all questioning strategies (judicial procedure, investigations...); its influence is still perceptible today, it was decisive for the Renaissance which devoted a veritable cult to it. Quintilian was himself the son of a lawyer and orator.
