J. G. Cotta's che Buchhandlung

Founded in 1787 at Tübingen by Johann Friedrich Cotta (1764–1832), the J. G. Cotta’sche Buchhandlung became a leading German publishing house. Later based in Stuttgart, it published Goethe and Schiller, ran influential journals (Die Horen; Morgenblatt für gebildete Stände), and shaped the circulation of ideas in literature, scholarship, and travel writing. The imprint continued through the 19th century, transitioning to J. G. Cotta’sche Buchhandlung Nachfolger (from 1889). The firm’s historical records are preserved in the Cotta Archive (Württembergische Landesbibliothek, Stuttgart). Since 1977, the legacy has continued under Klett-Cotta.
