First edition, rarely complete, even rarer as we present it in its original state, in 9 parts in publisher's boards intended to be bound in two large volumes. The illustration comprises two engraved title pages, 40 steel engravings drawn by Bartlet (various engravers), and hundreds of wood engravings in the text.
Publisher's full red cloth boards with gilt decoration. Smooth spine decorated with a large panel. Covers decorated with a large stamp featuring machinery and factories; blind-stamped frame. Headcaps rubbed. Scattered foxing in the margins of the engravings and tissue guards browned. The last three volumes are with conjugate leaves. Three volumes have some signatures slightly protruding.
