GALERIE BARBAZANGES (PARIS) (1911 - 1928)

The Galerie Barbazanges was an avant‑garde art gallery in Paris, opened in 1911 by Henri Barbazanges at 109 Rue du Faubourg Saint‑Honoré in premises rented from fashion designer Paul Poiret. The gallery occupied several rooms and a large skylit hall connected to Poiret’s mansion, and quickly became a venue for exhibitions, poetry readings and concerts of new music. Poiret reserved the right to hold two shows a year, including the famous 1916 exhibition L’Art Moderne en France (the “Salon d’Antin”), where Pablo Picasso’s Les Demoiselles d’Avignon was shown publicly for the first time alongside works by Modigliani, Kisling and others. Throughout the 1910s and 1920s the gallery exhibited major modern artists such as Robert Delaunay, Henri Matisse, Marc Chagall, Maurice Utrillo, Ossip Zadkine, and hosted themed shows like the 1922 Exposition d’art irlandais and the exhibitions of the Groupe des peintres‑graveurs indépendants. On 8 March 1920 Erik Satie’s Musique d’ameublement (furniture music) received its first public performance there during intermissions of a play by Max Jacob. Barbazanges retired in 1923, after which his associate Hodebert continued under the name Galerie Barbazanges‑Hodebert; by 1928 the activity had shifted to the Galerie L. C. Hodebert and the original space later housed the Galerie Heim.
