Printer-bookseller in Paris from 1557 to 1583; Royal Printer for Languages (1571-1581). "Campanus" by origin, meaning from Champagne according to some or from Campania according to others. Studied humanities in Paris. In 1549, he was a proofreader for Charlotte Guillard, printer-bookseller. In November 1552, he married Jeanne de Vascosan, daughter of Michel de Vascosan and niece of Robert I Estienne, both Royal printers-booksellers.
He received the position of Royal Printer following the death of Robert II, son of Robert I Estienne. In June 1578, he took over the establishment of his late father-in-law, Michel de Vascosan, on Rue Saint-Jacques. In 1581, due to illness, he relinquished his position as Royal Printer in favor of his son.
He worked in partnership with his father-in-law Michel de Vascosan, and printed for the bookseller Nicolas Chesneau. Author of several books such as "De la guerre continuelle et perpétuel combat des chrétiens" (On the Continual and Perpetual War of Christians), and translator notably of the treatises of Saint John Chrysostom. Dean of the professors and interpreters of Louis XIII.

The Latin form "Federicum Morellum" identifies the workshop of the Frédéric Morels, father and son, leading Parisian printers-booksellers. Frédéric Morel the Elder (1523-1583) was active in Paris from 1557; Frédéric (Frédéric) Morel the Younger (c. 1552-1630) succeeded him and held the titles of Ordinary Royal Printer (1579) then Royal Printer for Greek (from 1581). Their books frequently bore the Latin mention Apud Federicum Morellum or Excudebat Federicus Morellus, with the address "in vico Bellouaco, ad urbanam Morum". Their publications covered a broad spectrum of humanist texts (Latin, Greek), sometimes under the designation architypographus regius.

    A rare first edition, of which no subsequent reprint exists, complete with all his Neo-Latin poems, chiefly composed in Rome. The volume also contains two Greek poems at ff. 60 and 62, together with a poem which inspired the celebrated sonnet Happy he who like Ulysses.

    Modern binding in full limp vellum, smooth spine, red edges, white pastedowns and endleaves.

    Some defects within: discreet restoration to inner margin of title verso; small tear without loss at foot of ff. 2-3; dampstaining to lower margin of ff. 25-28 and 45-48; minimal marginal defect to f. 44, not affecting...

    Reused binding in full cream vellum probably from the 17th century.
    In his Hymne au Roy, du Bellay praises the Duke of Guise who retook Calais from the English, on 8 January 1558, after a week's siege and the death of two hundred Englishmen. Let us recall that Calais had been in English hands since 1347.
