In 1921, Mesens met Erik Satie who introduced him to Man Ray and Brâncusi. Seduced by Dadaism, he went the following year to Paris where he met Philippe Soupault, then Louis Aragon, André Breton and Paul Éluard. Alongside Paul Nougé, Marcel Lecomte, Camille Goemans and Magritte, he founded the Belgian surrealist group.
