Edition of the French translation by Desaintange (Ange-François Fariau de Saint-Ange (1747-1810)), with the French version alongside the Latin. The very famous illustration comprises a portrait of Desaintange, a frontispiece, and 139 figures by Eisen, Moreau Le Jeune, Gravelot, Monnet, Boucher and engraved by Massard, Simmonet, Née, Leveau, Ponce, Binet, De Longueil... Most by Eisen and Moreau Le Jeune. Complete with the leaf showing placement of engravings after the title of volume I.
Contemporary binding in full blonde sheep marbled in green and brown. Smooth spine decorated with 4 compartments in grotesque style (stars and small tools), with roulettes at head and foot (wide Empire-style roulette at foot). Vine-motif border frame. Title and volume labels in blonde sheep. Loss to upper joint at head of volume I with 3cm split. One cut to headcap of volume I. Loss to upper joint at head of volume 2. One gathering in vol. II p.55 largely detached, and protruding by a few millimeters. Scattered pale foxing. A good copy.
