Contemporary full marbled and glazed calf bindings. Smooth spines decorated. Red morocco title and volume labels. Head of spine of volume II worn, joint of upper board cracked at head without gravity and tear at tail with lack. One corner bumped. Small lack to title label of volumes I and II. Rubbing. Good copy.
Bookplate of Paul de Thomas.
It is this work that made Lesage a distinguished and immediately famous writer. The author had borrowed the plot from Guevarra, the devil carrying a mortal on the rooftops and observing scenes in dwellings, pretext for numerous discussions on the morals of Parisians, but it is an entirely original work in which the author's critical spirit excelled, since it is a satire of Parisian morals and customs, and which naturally surpasses the Parisian microcosm to reach social and philosophical criticism. This satirical writing had great success until the end of the 19th century.
