First edition in book form of The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club, published in London by Chapman and Hall in 1837, following its appearance in monthly parts beginning in March 1836. Dickens’s first novel, the work is illustrated with forty-three engraved plates, including a frontispiece and engraved title, by Robert Seymour, Robert William Buss, and Hablot Knight Browne, known as Phiz. The printed title is dated MDCCCXXXVII.

First edition, first issue, illustrated by Phiz (Hablot K. Browne) with 40 figures including a frontispiece and an engraved title with vignette. On the frontispiece, 100L on the telegraph pole and 7 people in the mail coach. Errata with 14 lines of text and a blank verso. The plate facing page 70 was unfortunately not inserted in the volume. As with all his editions, Dickens worked closely with the illustrator.

Rare first edition illustrated with 40 plates by Phiz (H. K. Browne) including a frontispiece portrait of Dickens with his signature. The printing contains all the errors of the first issue, except the first point: P. 123, "sister" corrected to "visiter". P. 245 l. 10 "flys" for "flies", uncorrected. "Visiters" instead of "Visitors" p. 272. l.2. ; P. 297. l.22 "incontestible" instead of "Inconstable" ; P. 586. l. 24 "suprise" for "surprise". All illustrated editions of Dickens were the result of close collaboration between the author and the illustrator.

New edition after the original of 1837 published by the same publisher, conforming in all respects to it. It is illustrated with 43 satirical captioned plates including a frontispiece and a title-frontispiece bearing the date 1837.
Later binding ca 1880 in half brown shagreen. Spine with false raised bands decorated with compartments and blind fillets. Gilt title. Browning on the verso of the half-title, otherwise very clean throughout with rare spotting. It is rare to encounter the engravings without foxing due to the paper used which is most often found heavily browned or foxed. Light traces of rubbing. Handsome copy.

MCCCXXXVII on title page. The plates bear no captions; the first 27 have pagination at bottom of page, the following bear no indication and appear to be before lettering (with pencil pagination notation). Our volume possesses several features attesting to the very first printing: Line 29 p. 260: "holding"; p. 341 line 1: "inbe-licate"; p. 342 line 5: "S.
