Pardon my non-french! You are all forgiven, you strange strangers who delight us with your torrents of tongue, your lexicons of legend, your diamonds of idiom. Let us relish the ripeness of your rhetoric, the wild, unheard-of wonders you weave, told in the tongue of Shakespeare, Goethe, Li Po, Dante, Cervantes, Khayyam, Sappho - or in the translations of Gide, Nerval, Judith Gauthier, Rivarol, Oudin, Toussaint, or Renée Vivien!

Our Great ModernsOur Great Moderns
Our Great Moderns

A traversal through the works of those who have been writing, imagining, and creating since the late twentieth century. This selection brings together pieces that mirror the shifts of an era — literary gestures, singular voices, new perspectives. Each book and object has been chosen to capture, through its material presence, the living imprint of our contemporaries.

Contemporary full marbled brown sheep bindings. Decorated smooth spines. Red morocco title and volume labels. Head of volume 2 slightly worn. Small lack at head of volume 1. Corners slightly bumped and trimmed.
Important testimony by Maistre de la Tour, French military mercenary who entered the service of Haidar Ali, Sultan of Mysore (1720-1782). He is described on the title page as: general of ten thousand men of the Mogul empire, & formerly commander-in-chief of the artillery of Ayder-Ali's army, & a corps of European troops, in the pay of this Nabob. The author's account revolves around two themes: presenting a...

    First edition.
Full blonde calf binding from the late 19th century signed Bauzonnet. Smooth spine decorated with two mirrored fleurons, fillets on the headcaps. Blind-stamped title. Triple fillet frame on the boards. Rich interior border. Very handsome copy.
Father Arthuys, a Jesuit, dramatized one of the most famous and touching stories from the Bible: Joseph was sold by his brothers as a slave in Egypt and became, by saving the pharaoh, master of Egypt as tax farmer. Benjamin is one of Jacob's sons, Joseph's brother by the same mother, Rachel. Before all his brothers, Joseph reveals himself. The tragedy was titled Christian although it is set before Christianity, in order to...

The first edition dates from 1722, it was illustrated with 4 figures. This new edition is illustrated with 5 unsigned figures, taken from the original. All editions of this novel appear uncommon. The title page does not contain the author's name. The fashion for exotic stories added a first title which is not found in other editions, and which could cause this work to be confused with that of Claude-François Lambert: L'infortunée sicilienne, ou mémoires et aventures de la comtesse Carini (1743). Not in Cohen (Livres à fig. XVIIIe).
Contemporary full blonde calf binding. Smooth decorated spine. Red morocco title label, and brown calf volume label. Pleasant copy.
    The novel begins...
