Emmanuel Armand de Vignerot du Plessis de Richelieu, duc d'Aiguillon, was appointed governor of Brittany in 1753; until 1770, he was in open war with the Parliament of Brittany, appointed by the king in a regional state that desired above all to preserve its privileges. Louis XV had to intervene several times in agreement with the duc d'Aiguillon. The memoirs record the numerous intrigues at court to destroy the duc d'Aiguillon. A final memoir concerns Louis XV's beautification projects in Nantes and Paris.
