ANONYME
Le fourbe puni, ou le duel des rivales. [Ensemble] Lettres infernales et Les tisons
S. n. • Aux enfers|s. l. 1740|9.50 x 16.70 cm|relié
First edition, rare. The second work is also in first edition, decorated with a frontispiece representing the devil handing a letter to a gentleman.
Contemporary full blonde calf binding. Ornate raised band spine. Red morocco title-label. One tear p. 127. Headcaps slightly worn.
Outstanding anonymous short novel, typical in its construction and writing of the first half of the 18th century, which narrates the encounter between a gentleman and a female duellist, the tallest woman he had ever seen; she will eventually tell her love story and provide an explanation for this curious duel. The second work, satirical, denounces, mocks and criticizes numerous subjects with bite in a tone that is to say the least strange. Certain veiled references seem abstruse.
