Clear and well-structured edition, perfectly illustrated with Scottish landscapes and historical scenes.
Publisher's binding in full beveled ultramarine gilt cloth. Smooth spine decorated with a large ornamental composition evoking medieval illuminated books. Large decorative blue and gold plate, very rich, with central cartouche, the whole evoking medieval illuminations. All edges gilt. Spine slightly faded. Headcaps rubbed with micro cuts. Corners rubbed and bumped. Internal hinge of lower board with tears, but the volume remains well bound and cohesive, without play. Copy on fine tinted vellum paper, completely free of foxing, perfectly fresh. Tissue guards still present. A protective covering has been added to protect the binding, we have left it in place.

First edition, one of 500 numbered copies on "hand-made paper", the only deluxe copies.
Full sand-colored cloth binding, smooth spine decorated with red typographic motifs in sanguine style, front cover ornamented with a pattern of red vertical fillets and six gilt fleur-de-lis, top edge gilt.
Work illustrated with 75 hors-texte color illustrations by Mortimer Menpes.
Very light foxing affecting mainly the first endpaper.

First English edition — of a recognised theological work — based on the 1906 first edition written in German.
Contemporary Bradel publisher's khaki binding, smooth spine lettered with the title and author's name in gilt at head and with the publisher's name in gilt at foot, as well as gilt fillets at extremities, two blind-stamped fillets framing the boards. Autograph inscription by Albert Schweitzer in ink on the front free endpaper to Adèle Herrenschmidt, a friend he nicknamed "Tata" — and possibly lover according to some scholars — thirty-two years his senior, with whom he maintained a close relationship for nearly a quarter of a century and whom he accompanied on travels, he to write, she to rest, on account of her fragile health: "Fribourg 1910, April. As a keepsake. Albert S."
Spine ends slightly sunken, a few faint spots to the spine.
