The rare first edition of this early novel by the author, overshadowed by the Rougon-Macquart series, but which prefigures naturalism and whose story is based on a news item. The novel is followed by Esquisses parisiennes, a collection of 4 short stories. The second edition would not appear until 1889 with Charpentier.
