An exceptional and highly aesthetic card from Albert Einstein to "the friend of the greatest geniuses of his time" - according to Schrödinger - mathematician and physicist Ludwig Hopf, who introduced Einstein to another 20^th-century genius: Carl Jung.

First and only edition of this rare treatise. Printer's device on title page and 11 in-text figures of different stones found in the human body. Small historiated initials.
Full 19th-century paper binding, shagreen title label, trace of pale yellow dampstain from leaf 15 to the end.
This treatise on stones or calculi is the first describing these phenomena; each of the 12 chapters explores a part of the human body where calculi were found (intestine, kidneys, gallbladder...). Additionally, the work relates various inedible objects that were ingested. Kentmann (1518-1574) was both mineralogist and physician, and particularly well placed to discourse on the subject.

The translations from Greek are by Theodore Gaza (1400-1475), Sebastian Guldenbeck (died 1565) and Pierre Gilles (1490-1555).

The rare first edition of this revised, commented and annotated edition by Johann Jakob Leu of Josias Simler's major work: "De republica helvetiorum" (1576). With a large folding map of Switzerland by Michael Kauffer after Christoph Weigel. A frontispiece by Fussli, often lacking elsewhere, has not been included with this copy.
Contemporary half vellum with corners. Smooth spine with title in black ink. Boards rubbed. Some marginal foxing. Map reinforced on verso with old paper. A good copy.
