Full grained sheep binding, circa 1900 (pastiche of a contemporary binding). Spine with raised bands, decorated. Roulette between the bands. Red morocco title-label. Head worn, as are corners and edges. Numerous gatherings browned. Leaves 128 to 131, lack at bottom of page filled with restoration paper that has browned.
Critical edition considerably annotated and commented.
Numerous manuscript notes in black ink by the owner Raymond Bonafour (1889).

Full marbled sheep binding, smooth spine richly decorated with gilt ornamental motifs, red morocco title-label, slight lack to upper headcap, one joint cracked at head with minimal lack, joints lightly rubbed, gilt tooling on edges which also show some rubbing traces, marbled endpapers and pastedowns, marbled edges, contemporary binding.

If Lesage has tried so many kinds, if so produced, and unevenly is that it is the first professional writer of this stature, and his work can be compared to that of Abbe Prevost it is contemporary. It remains unequaled author of the great picaresque novel Gil Blas French and some chips, especially in his theater. It is after all the great figure of French literature of the first half ^of the eighteenth, and the symbol of a turning point in French literature, one of the first to draw profits from his books, foreshadowing what will be the feuilletonistes the ^XIX; His work address is no longer a cultural elite but is popular.
