Limoges

Album of postcards depicting the châteaux of the Loire, probably dating from the late 1930s. 

 

A precious and moving inscription by General de Gaulle, on the verso of the album's title page, containing seventeen views of châteaux in the Loire valley: "Offered by my dear niece Geneviève", signed with his initials. It is with these very words that he presented her his war memoirs: "To my dear niece Geneviève, who was, at once, to the very end, on the brink of death, a soldier of Free France, and whose example has served me."

Rare pre-first edition offprint of Charles de Gaulle's article Les Origines de l'armée française, published in issue 520 of the Revue d'Infanterie in January 1936. This 44-page text appears two years later as the first chapter of his celebrated work La France et son armée, published by Plon in 1938. Presentation copy signed by the author "to M. Jean Auburtin": "With profound and faithful friendship. C. de Gaulle."

This first edition is printed on the right half of each page in an unbroken single column, with the top and bottom margins omitted. The left half, from the first to the last page, is occupied by the contribution of the painter and graphic artist Jean Cortot, in lithography.
The work is presented in the publisher’s board binding, each cover made of three laminated layers of corrugated cardboard, with the upper cover and spine printed; the slipcase is of the same type.
At the end of the volume, a small Limoges ceramic in colour, composed by Jean Cortot, is embedded in the board and protected...
