The illustration comprises a frontispiece, a title vignette (Bologna behind a she-wolf) and 20 figures as well as 16 vignettes placed at the end of certain cantos depicting the countryside around Bologna, all by Giuseppe Maria Crespi. Rare first edition illustrated with a frontispiece bearing Cardinal Mazarin's emblem and an out-of-text plate representing a cippus (funerary monument) found in Bologna in 1601.
This is a presentation and interpretation of the funerary stele of centurion Manilius Quintus Cordus (1st century BC) by philologist Alessandro Nigri which is now in the Bologna museum. The author cites other inscriptions including three relating to taurobolia (bull sacrifices).
Our copy is presented in original wrappers, under plain ivory paper covers with small marginal tears and a crease mark. Light and pale dampstaining throughout the volume in the upper margin.

First Italian edition translated by Giuseppe Venturoli of the work originally published in English under the title: "Experiments and Observations on Animal Heat". Illustrated with 3 folding plates at the end of the volume.
Contemporary half brown sheep binding. Smooth spine with 4 fleurons and multiple roulettes. Red morocco title label. A 1cm loss between the title label and the following compartment. Rubbing. Corners with paper loss.
Adair Crawford (1748-1795), chemist and physicist, was above all a pioneer of calorimetry, which measures quantities of heat. Crawford presents in his work new experiments proving that gas exchange in animal respiration is combustion.

Second edition enriched with a dedication letter to Pietro Barozzi, bishop of Padua, the original was published the year before in Florence.
The work is entirely rubricated in blue and red and has beautiful gilt letter “Q” on the a3 leaf, as well as a gilt illumination representing an ecclesiastical blazon with a star and a laurel crown in the center, at the bottom of the same leaf.
