Pardon my non-french! You are all forgiven, you strange strangers who delight us with your torrents of tongue, your lexicons of legend, your diamonds of idiom. Let us relish the ripeness of your rhetoric, the wild, unheard-of wonders you weave, told in the tongue of Shakespeare, Goethe, Li Po, Dante, Cervantes, Khayyam, Sappho - or in the translations of Gide, Nerval, Judith Gauthier, Rivarol, Oudin, Toussaint, or Renée Vivien!

Le Feu Follet's Letter #76

Deadly & Heady Sins

... et un bilboquet.

One cannot quite profit from vows we declare,
Yet don’t give up ground to a world in disrepair.
Seek the Ancients’ counsel, heed them shrewdly,
And from La Confession Coupée, pull the slips up slowly.
Should you find that your sins are mortal and deep,
Forget hollow temptations that dazzle and creep.
But do not consign all your whims to disgrace -
Choose the sin that best suits your appetite’s taste,
And enter the New Year with pleasures embraced...

INVESTIGATION. La Confession coupée ou la Méthode facile pour se préparer aux confessions

______

"Speech is silver, silence is golden": who but a Belgian could transform this popular adage into an ecclesiastical rule cast in the very same metal, with characteristic humor and irreverence?

Yet it was in all seriousness that Leutbreuwer, a Franciscan friar well-read in the virtues of monastic silence, conceived this incomparable catalog of sins: offering at once redemption at a lesser moral cost and a wide selection of new vices to explore...

While such silent confessions would doubtless frustrate the psychoanalyst, this compendium remains a unique archive for the historian and an unparalleled delight for the poet. It is hardly surprising that one of these exceedingly rare book-objects should have found its way into Apollinaire's Infernal Library!

SELECTION. "Deadly & Heady Sins"

______

Péchés

Of all our vices, which one came first?

Adam's envy

The Serpent's pride

God's greed

Eve's gluttony

The Divine wrath

Lazy Sundays

Or the lust brought on by all these sins...

From "the" Book to all books, no good story comes without a little transgression.

Writers and poets, hallowed be your vices, your faults be done, venial be your kingdom, in literature as it is on cloud nine.

Presentation copy from Pagnol to Druon, his admirer
Idealised childhood is an age-old leitmotif, but since the 20th-century it has had a name: Marcel Pagnol. No writer has better captured a child’s sensitivity and capacity for wonder. Among his most fervent admirers is another writer, who would gladly have belonged to his large Provençal family: Maurice Druon. He crowned Pagnol the blessed king of childhood. “How human you are beneath such pleasant appearances! Reading you, I now feel as though I have become one of your childhood friends. And I await the sequel to La Gloire de mon père [My Father’s Glory] as a reward. I admire you and send you a warm embrace. Maurice”

Young heroes, old heralds...
The bridges of knowledge between generations are growing fragile, and each now sees only the gulf that separates it from the other, rather than the paths that unite them. Yet Man is not always a wolf to the young, and many are the writings of former children that have contributed to the political and sociological awakening of those who came after them.

Catholic fervour or anticlerical fever: in the land of Bossuet and Voltaire, religion is a family affair far more than an affair of state, and many a family supper threatens to be the Last, where, happily, the breaking of bread and the miracle of wine reconcile cassocked brothers with their sans-culotte cousins...
