Pardon my non-french! You are all forgiven, you strange strangers who delight us with your torrents of tongue, your lexicons of legend, your diamonds of idiom. Let us relish the ripeness of your rhetoric, the wild, unheard-of wonders you weave, told in the tongue of Shakespeare, Goethe, Li Po, Dante, Cervantes, Khayyam, Sappho - or in the translations of Gide, Nerval, Judith Gauthier, Rivarol, Oudin, Toussaint, or Renée Vivien!

The Feu Follet's Letter #21

The Chevalier de Sade Archives

"The right of the strongest..." Thus La Fontaine denounced, under the guise of the fable’s simplicity, the Machiavellian nature of our customs and the hypocrisy of our so-called "moral" values. Yet, while the voices and demands of the oppressed have often been silenced, the miracle of the printing press has enabled their dissemination and preservation over time, until they could find an echo that would restore their justice.

L'Enquête.

Plongée au cœur des archives du Chevalier Louis de Sade

"Might is right." La Fontaine thus ingeniously denounced the Machiavellianism of our ways and the hypocrisy of our so-called "moral" values. Although the words and the claims of the oppressed were often silenced, the miracle of printing allowed their diffusion and their preservation. As time passed, they found an echo that brought them justice.
In search of discordant voices, Edition-Originale looks at these confidential publications by the men and women who took society by storm to proclaim the possibility of another world.

The Investigation.
Chevalier Louis de Sade's archives

Our new investigation also focuses on “otherness”. But far from a word a with revolutionary undertones, we showcase this week the complete and entirely unpublished archives of a penniless nobleman, a self-taught intellectual, a philosopher and an anti-Enlightenment man, who went through the Revolution, the Empire, the Restoration, and the July Revolution while remaining a pure counter-Revolutionary. He fought not to preserve privileges he never enjoyed but by philosophical conviction which he argued profusely in his writings.

Join us in a deep dive into the holistic thought of the Marquis de Sade’s cousin who embraced all the fields of knowledge. An accomplished scientist and tide expert, the Chevalier de Sade was also a harsh critic of Necker’s economic theories. Just like his illustrious relative, he reinvented the world from the bottom of a jail...

Once upon a first time…
Gutenberg's Bible was preceded by several ephemera printed with movable type which the legendary B42 always claimed to be the first to use. No matter. The true origin may in fact be Buddhist, since in 1377 the Jikji was already being printed with a similar method. Can one consider fries to be Belgian? What does pasta owe to the Arab world? Isn't the croissant a descendant of the Austrian kipferl? The very idea of champagne may have been born in the mind of an Englishman, Christopher Merret! "First" is decidedly fiction, but to open this new season, Le Feu Follet is pleased to offer you the very first look at its brand-new selection: "Once Upon a First Time…"
