Pardon my non-french! You are all forgiven, you strange strangers who delight us with your torrents of tongue, your lexicons of legend, your diamonds of idiom. Let us relish the ripeness of your rhetoric, the wild, unheard-of wonders you weave, told in the tongue of Shakespeare, Goethe, Li Po, Dante, Cervantes, Khayyam, Sappho - or in the translations of Gide, Nerval, Judith Gauthier, Rivarol, Oudin, Toussaint, or Renée Vivien!

Our Great Moderns

A traversal through the works of those who have been writing, imagining, and creating since the late twentieth century. This selection brings together pieces that mirror the shifts of an era — literary gestures, singular voices, new perspectives. Each book and object has been chosen to capture, through its material presence, the living imprint of our contemporaries.

Le Feu Follet's Letter #77

Roads & Inroads of Pacifism

It is a difficult ascent toward harmony,
And a dangerous slope toward chaos.
It is acquired each day and never possessed.
It is not a state; it is a struggle:
Peace.

It is the most ardent universal wish, and the least consistent of human achievements.

It was desired and conceived by the earliest societies, serving at once as ferment and cement. Subsequently the same societies tore themselves apart and reconciled in its very name.

It stems from the best of intentions and is used as pretext for the worst behavior.

It is the enemy of War although it means ceaselessly preparing for conflict.

To enjoy it, some are ready to die standing while others accept to live on their knees.

A truth ignored in 1914, it became an error committed in 1939.

It is a difficult ascent toward harmony,

And a dangerous slope toward chaos.

It is acquired each day and never possessed.

It is not a state; it is a struggle:

Peace.

INVESTIGATION. "Let us read Romain Rolland again as the world darkens"

______

For Jean-Christophe, "universal life" is not a trivial activity but a long quest toward wisdom and European fraternity.

Supported by Péguy, admired by Zweig, loved by Gorky, Romain Rolland embodies the ultimate pacifist and universalist struggle against the world’s warmongering passions.

Le Feu Follet has discovered the unique copy belonging to the administrator of the Cahiers de la Quinzaine, with exceptionally added contributions by Charles Péguy, as well as Rolland's corrections and comments. It includes proof sheets and other traces of the immense work undertaken for this extraordinary opus, a literary testament to what Europe could have been–had the pacifists won the (pre-)war.

SELECTION.  « Pacifist Writers »

______

Imagine all the people
Living their lives in peace.
John may be a dreamer,
But he's not the only one,
He hopes that one day...

Tomorrow perhaps?

FOCUS. Ange Goudar, The Peace of Europe Cannot Be Established Without a Long Truce, or Project for a General Pacification

______

Goudar

"It can be demonstrated geometrically that there is no certainty so long as survival of mankind is but a sort of game of chance, and as the destruction of the human species will depend upon the caprice of war and the fortune of arms.

It is true that imagination strays, and reason is confounded, when one seeks to bring the interests of all nations to a fixed point of union. [...]

So many different minds; so many contrary views; so many state of interests diametrically opposed to one another, leaving gaps behind that the spirit of mediation cannot fill."

Once upon a first time…
Gutenberg's Bible was preceded by several ephemera printed with movable type which the legendary B42 always claimed to be the first to use. No matter. The true origin may in fact be Buddhist, since in 1377 the Jikji was already being printed with a similar method. Can one consider fries to be Belgian? What does pasta owe to the Arab world? Isn't the croissant a descendant of the Austrian kipferl? The very idea of champagne may have been born in the mind of an Englishman, Christopher Merret! "First" is decidedly fiction, but to open this new season, Le Feu Follet is pleased to offer you the very first look at its brand-new selection: "Once Upon a First Time…"
