Alexandre DUMAS
Ange Pitou
Chez Dufour • Mulat • Boulanger|Paris 1856|18 x 27 cm|relié
First illustrated edition, rare, with 27 plates hors-texte, including the frontispiece by Philippoteaux, Pisan,
Contemporary half black grained shagreen binding signed Ch. Girard (Angers) with grained green percaline boards. Spine with raised bands decorated with blind and gilt fillets. Gilt title. Small pale and whitish stains on lower board, one darker stain on upper board. Leaves 351 and 355 restored (torn corner). Fresh overall but with small pale browning scattered and unevenly distributed. Although the paper appears clean, it now has a color close to laid paper and has lost its whiteness.
A title rarely encountered, the Three Musketeers or Count of Monte-Cristo series being more common. The novel bears the subtitle Mémoire d'un médecin, the whole forming a cycle of 5 novels more or less sequential, as Alexandre Dumas always proceeds: La comtesse de Charny, Le chevalier de Maison-Rouge, Le collier de la reine, Joseph Basalmo. These novels are all set during the French Revolution period.
