Friedrich von SCHILLER
oeuvres dramatiques de F. Schiller
Ladvocat|Paris 1821|13 x 21 cm|6 Volumes reliés
First collected edition in French translation by Baron Prosper Brugière de Barante. One lithographed portrait as frontispiece. Lengthy biographical notice on the life and writings of the author. This translation enterprise was the first to aim at being exhaustive of Schiller's theatre. It was decisive for knowledge of the writer in France, which did not see a new complete translation of his theatre until 2005.
Contemporary half black glazed calf binding with corners signed Bibolet at the foot of the first volume (famous binder of the Restoration and binder to Talleyrand). Raised spine decorated with compartments, fillets and rolls at head and foot. Traces of rubbing, particularly on boards and corners. Gilding somewhat faded, but handsome copy. Some pale scattered foxing.
Contains: The Robbers, The Conspiracy of Fiesco, Intrigue and Love, The Maid of Orleans, Mary Stuart, Wallenstein's Camp, The Piccolomini, The Death of Wallenstein, The Bride of Messina, William Tell, Homage of the Arts, The Misanthrope, Don Carlos, Demetrius. Notes, fragments, prefaces...
