Lodovico DOLCE
Giornale delle historie del mondo, delle cose degne di memoria di giorno in giorno
Al segno della salamandra • [ Damiano Zenara]|In Venetia [Venice] 1572|11 x 15 cm|relié
First edition published posthumously thanks to the contribution of Guglielmo Rinaldi, friend and disciple of the author. Extensive table at the beginning of the work which catalogues all the events recorded in the Giornale.
Full marbled morocco binding in imitation of a Renaissance binding, executed and signed by Apparuti (card inside the book). Spine with 3 raised bands decorated with blind tooled ornaments in mirror image, gilt fillets on the bands. Boards stamped with a complex central diamond-shaped tool; gilt then blind border and 4 small tools in the corners. On the first board, in the upper cartouche: L. Dolce; on the second board: H. Mondo; traces of ties. Scattered pale foxing. Last leaf restored and blacked out in lower margin. Perfect condition.
The first pre-encyclopedic creation to concentrate history in brief entries, dismantling it from all rhetorical devices. An important innovative experiment which lists chronologically the days and months of different events. "Encyclopedic and bizarre, punctuated day by day with facts worthy of memory [...]" (G.Romei). This innovation would be widely followed at the end of the 16th century, drawing on histories of the wonders of the world (Polydore Vergil), where different inventions throughout time are recounted.
