First edition, illustrated with 24 steel engravings by the Rouargue brothers, including 2 hand-colored woodcuts.
Contemporary half navy blue shagreen binding. Spine with false raised bands decorated with gilt compartments. Shagreen-textured cloth boards with blind fillets. Gilt edges. White moiré endpapers.
Fine copy, in perfect condition, free from foxing and retaining its tissue guards.
This book which visits all the cities along the Rhine was published during the golden age of tourism there; the spa towns of the Rhine were then fashionable, as were the Swiss and German cities. The work consists of descriptions, contemporary and historical anecdotes and notes on customs.
