Contemporary full brown calf binding with modern slipcase covered in antique marbled paper. Spine with raised bands richly decorated. Red morocco title label, red morocco volume label. To volume I: a small lack to the lower joint at head, lacks at foot. Minute lacks between the raised bands; some nibbling to the lower board. Surface wear to the spine of volume I and partially to the boards. Some surface wear to volume II. 3 signatures misaligned in volume I, one in volume II. Title page of volume II with a cut and a lack. Trace of dampstain to the first 4 leaves at outer margin. A tear to the plate of cut stones. Overall a fresh set.
A dealer in precious stones and luxury objects, Tavernier made six voyages between 1630 and 1668 and became immensely wealthy by selling to Louis XIV the famous blue diamond and other precious stones for 3 million livres. He wrote his memoirs from notes taken during his travels.
