Pardon my non-french! You are all forgiven, you strange strangers who delight us with your torrents of tongue, your lexicons of legend, your diamonds of idiom. Let us relish the ripeness of your rhetoric, the wild, unheard-of wonders you weave, told in the tongue of Shakespeare, Goethe, Li Po, Dante, Cervantes, Khayyam, Sappho - or in the translations of Gide, Nerval, Judith Gauthier, Rivarol, Oudin, Toussaint, or Renée Vivien!

Our Great ModernsOur Great Moderns
Our Great Moderns

A traversal through the works of those who have been writing, imagining, and creating since the late twentieth century. This selection brings together pieces that mirror the shifts of an era — literary gestures, singular voices, new perspectives. Each book and object has been chosen to capture, through its material presence, the living imprint of our contemporaries.

    André Pralard|Paris 1671|9.4 x 15.8 cm|Relié

First edition of an important work by Charles Sorel, historiographer of France and novelist, in which he surveys with severity and wit the literary production of his time, which he considered overly given to fiction.

Recueil de pieces en prose, les plus agreables de ce temps. composees par divers auteurs

    Chez Charles de Sercy|1658|8.50 x 14 cm|relié

The rare first edition of this collection in which all the works have been chosen by Charles Sorel. Lacking the frontispiece. A second part will appear in 1662.
Contemporary limp full vellum binding. Smooth spine with later black ink title. Lacking endpapers. Book partially detached from the binding and held only by a few stitches.
Charles Sorel composed this collection of gallant pieces in prose whose authors have not been identified; one can distinguish more than 18 pieces on love, banter and gallantry, testimonies to a literary genre now disappeared, precious literature, of a certain frivolity, and which owed much to the literary salons of the time. One will note the...

First edition. Rare. One copy at the university library of Tours, absent from the BN de France and the British Library, one copy in Edinburgh. Brunet does not cite this book among the works of Sorel.
Contemporary full speckled brown sheep. Decorated spine with raised bands. Headcaps worn, upper joint cracked one-third down, corners slightly bumped. Attributed to Sorel by Barbier in the dictionary of anonymous works, the book treats an uncommon subject and a very free manner of making money in all trades and disciplines, from artisans to bankers and men of letters, the work extends its reflection to less official means such as court favors, inheritances. The whole constitutes an economic...
