    First edition, one of 1000 numbered copies on Arches paper, the only edition after 10 copies on Japan paper.
    Work illustrated with 10 wood engravings by Pierre-Eugène Vibert after drawings by Rouveyre which were subsequently destroyed by Rouveyre and whose text engraved on wood by Vibert was entirely burned.
    Some foxing on the covers, a tiny hole in the lower right corner of the first cover, handsome interior condition.
    Autograph inscription dated and signed by André Rouveyre to Jules Romains.

    First edition consisting of 26 full-page drawing plates by Ferdinand Bac.
    Preface by Marcel Prévost.
    Bradel binding in half red cloth with corners, smooth spine, black shagreen title-label, gilt date at foot, gilt fillet frame on marbled paper boards, speckled endpapers and pastedowns, original wrappers preserved, corners slightly bumped, contemporary binding.
    First wrapper preserved but tending to come loose, light superficial scuffing to boards without significance.

    The book is also decorated with an original composition by Henri Matisse reproduced in stencil in yellow and white on the covers as well as with 6 linocuts: 2 headbands, 2 culs-de-lumière and 2 drop caps.
    Back of the shirt slightly exposed, small spots on the flats of the case.
    Pleasant copy in spite of small freckles without gravity mainly affecting some sheets in their margins.
