L. RAMOND
First collected edition of these 4 memoirs read at the Institut National between 1804 and 1809.
Twentieth-century full vellum, smooth spine. Red morocco title-label. Contemporary marbled edges.
These four memoirs concern the use of the barometer for measuring altitude and in geographical and meteorological applications. Ramon had established the relationship between altitude, temperature and air pressure by working on Laplace's propositions contained in his Système d'exposition du monde. He was the first to apply his own method during his travels to the Pyrenees and the Massif Central, this method was immediately followed by Arago, Humboldt and Biot. The work also serves as a precise guide for barometer-based measurements. The memoirs were revised and completed for this edition and the author added elementary instruction. An index contains numerous calculation tables (with some manuscript annotations in ink).
