A rare edition of this work, which include Dialogue de l'amour et de l'amitié, Critique de l'Opéra, La Peinture, Le Miroir ou la métamorphose d'Orante, La Chambre de justice de l'amour, une Critique de l'opéra Alceste.
Also featured is Charles Perrault's description of the now-lost Labyrinth of Versailles, a creation by the great Le Nôtre.

This remarkable labyrinth boasted thirty-nine fountains, each illustrating one of Aesop's fables and accompanied by verses from Isaac de Benserade.

Illustrated with 5 full-text engravings (2 vignettes each) and a vignette on the engraved title, after the frontispiece by Antoine Clouzier for the first edition of Perrault's tales (Paris, Barbin, 1697).
Full roan binding, smooth spine framed in gilt and gilt motifs, black title label stamped in gilt, boards framed in gilt, inner dentelle, endpapers and pastedowns in caillouté paper, all edges gilt. Joints slightly split at head of spine, a small brown stain to title page and frontispiece, some spotting.

A very scarce item, OCLC does not locate any copy printed by Saintin at this address.

Illustrated edition with color lithographs by Madeleine Luka and printed in 207 numbered copies on Vosges laid paper, ours being one of 10 copies containing an original signed watercolor by Madeleine Luka as well as a color suite of all the illustrations.

This edition contains eight famous tales by Perrault: Le Petit Chaperon Rouge (Little Red Riding Hood), Les Fées (The Fairies), La Barbe Bleue (Bluebeard), La Belle au bois dormant (Sleeping Beauty), Le Chat Botté (Puss in Boots), Cendrillon (Cinderella), Riquet à la Houppe (Ricky of the Tuft), and Le Petit Poucet (Hop-o'-My-Thumb), as well as The Clever Princess or Finette by his niece Marie-Jeanne L'Héritier de Villandon, wrongly attributed to Perrault. The collection ends with La Veuve et ses deux filles, by Marie Leprince de Beaumont.

Magic Lantern Red Riding Hood – 12 Lantern slides Complete series of illustrations the tale of Red Riding Hood hand-painted on 12 glass plates intended for a magic lantern, the ancestor of the projector and the cinema.
Publisher's cardboard box, with the titles on the top board: “12 Superior English Made lantern slides”. Handwritten: “Red Riding Hood”. Signs of rubbing on the box. A stop in the split lid at 2cm. On plate 9, paper is missing which circles the plate in a border. On plate 12, the black part has a small scratch, this part encircling the medallion which is projected by the lantern. Otherwise collection in excellent condition.
Millikin & Lawley carried out their trade in magic lanterns and plates between 1860 and 1900.

This illustrated edition originally appeared from Curmer but the frontispieces of each tale were only printed in black whereas they have been printed in bistre in this edition. The text of the tales is entirely engraved in italics and superbly printed on strong laid paper. The illustrations in the text are finely engraved on steel, they are due to the imagination of Pauquet, Marvy, Jeanron, Jacque, Beaucé, Jules Compagnon, and engraved by Monin.
The 15-page notice on the life and works of Perrault by Paul Jacob appeared for the first time in the 1836 edition, the same is true for the dissertation in fine on fairy tales.
One general title in bistre and 9 frontispieces in bistre; each page of each tale entirely engraved with text and composition framing the text or as headpieces, tailpieces...
Publisher's binding in half dark green shagreen. Spine with false raised bands richly decorated with ornate compartments. All edges gilt. White glazed watered paper for the endpapers. Signs of rubbing. 2 frontispieces partly detached. Some small scattered foxing on paper that is quite white with full margins. A handsome copy.
"It is one of the most beautiful illustrated books of the 19th century and perhaps the rarest in fine condition..." Carteret (Le trésor du bibliophile romantique et moderne). This edition is very rare and is encountered only very infrequently, just like the one published by Curmer, it found itself, as Carteret affirms, in the hands of children with little bibliophilic sense.

Illustrated first edition. Faerno's verses appeared for the first time in 1564, and Perrault's version in 1699. This edition gives for the first time Faerno's original text followed by Perrault's translation. It is illustrated with a frontispiece by Claude du Bosc representing Aesop among animals, and 100 unsigned headpieces (9 x 11 cm). The preliminary leaves contain some poems by the neo-Latin poet and some letters.

Full aubergine morocco binding from the late 19th century signed Chatelin in the frieze. Richly ornamented spine with raised bands. Title, date and place in gilt. Central framing à la Du Seuil with fleurons in the corners and 4 large fleurons inside the rectangle. Triple fillet frame. Rich interior frieze with fleur-de-lys. Gilt edges. Red peacock-tail paper slipcase with blue felt interior. Perfect freshness of the paper.

Sumptuous copy lavishly bound in a master binding.

Superb work of fables very close in its illustration to emblem books. The book is moreover catalogued as such in several collections of emblems, as emphasized by the art historian Mario Praz, although it is not strictly speaking one.

Contemporary Bradel binding with floral motifs enhanced in gilt, smooth spine, red morocco title label, pink endpapers and flyleaves with spots of silver, gilt and green paint, original wrappers preserved, bookplate "Après moi le sommeil" drawn by Max Ernst from the library of Paul Eluard on pastedown.
