Half red Russia morocco binding, smooth spine decorated with gilt fillets and showing traces of rubbing, gilt volume number, rubbed headcaps, minimal wormhole on one joint, embossed paper boards, corners slightly bumped, marbled endpapers and pastedowns, contemporary binding.
Our copy is enhanced with 6 autograph letters from the author, bound at the end, to two booksellers in Besançon to whom he intends to sell copies from his library in order to subsequently purchase other copies from these same booksellers.
A reply letter from one bookseller is included, bound with the others.

Rare gathering of these two texts bound together.

First edition. A tear with a loss to the head of the spine of the second volume, stitching of the first volume weakened, a pale marginal dampstain affecting the first two leaves of the first volume.
