Neraïr et Melhoë. Conte ou histoire. ouvrage orné de digressions
S. n.|s. l. [1740] An IX l'âge de l'auteur|9 x 16.50 cm|2 volumes reliés
First edition, rare, attributed to Blanes by Barbier and to Parfaict (who cites Blanes as second attribution) by Cioranescu. Title pages in red and black. This novel later appeared, with a new beginning, under another title: Le Miroir, ou Histoire de Griguenodine; apart from the first page, the pagination and chapters correspond with this edition.
Contemporary full brown sheep binding. Spine with raised bands decorated with 4 fleurons and an eagle at foot. Red morocco title and volume labels. Head damaged with lacks to joints. Foot rubbed with lacks to joints. Corners very bumped.
Utopia, that is to say according to Cioranescu's definition: "individualized literary description of an imaginary society", which implies an underlying critique of real society, to paraphrase Cioranescu. The story is set in a small happy monarchy between Utopia and the land of the Sevarambes, 3000 years ago. The rapid narration is interspersed with amorous intrigues at court, intrigues full of fairies; the whole forming a fine satire of men, customs and institutions, and desire.
