Ignace-Gaston PARDIES
Discours de la connoissance des bêtes
Chez Pierre de Coup|à Amsterdam 1724|7.50 x 13 cm|relié
Fourth edition statement, the first edition having appeared in 1672.
Contemporary full brown sheep binding. Spine with raised bands, decorated. Red morocco title label. 2 tears to spine with losses. Surface wear to lower board.
The work is constructed in two parts: an exposition of Cartesianism and all the reasoning of the Cartesians for the first, and a refutation for the second. This work by Pardies (1636-1673), mathematician and philosopher, had the greatest impact, undoubtedly because the defense was so weak that it was seen as a reinforcement of the Cartesian theory of mechanism.
