First edition. Rare Lima, Peru imprint. Privilege granted by Brother Francisco Xavier de la Escalante, prior of the province of S. Juan Batista del Peru del sagrado orden de predicadores.
Contemporary limp vellum binding (the endbands suggest a binder outside of Europe). Smooth spine. Printed paper label for the title. Trace of an old label at foot. Remnants of ties on the boards. Good copy, in perfect fresh condition.
Engraved bookplate from the late 19th century: Maisonneuve & Cie. Quai Voltaire. Paris. Stamp on title page: Pères dominicains. Poitiers.
Work by the Panamanian Dominican Brother Osorio, the book was intended to demonstrate the immaculate conception of Mary. After the expulsion of the Jesuits from South America in 1767, philosophical activity experienced a sharp decline. Osorio's work is evidence of indigenous activity, independent of thought in South America.
