Contemporary full blonde calf binding with tree calf pattern, signed P. Leffèvre. Smooth spine decorated with 5 urn tools and roulettes. Blonde calf title label. Floral border frame doubled with a roulette. Interior roulette and on the edges. Gilt edges. Some rubbing. The tissue guards still present have caused some pale foxing. Spine slightly faded. Handsome copy.
Small adventure novel set in the Middle Ages during the time of the first crusades, in Bellegrade, Hungary; the author begins with a critique of the barbarism of feudal times, which only the virtue and heart of women redeemed from brutality. Notable is the critical vision of history, a post-revolutionary perception of events.

Full brown morocco binding, spine with five raised bands set with black fillets, one joint slightly cracked at head, gilt roulettes on headcaps, frame of interlaced triple gilt fillets with decorative corners and gilt floral motifs at angles on full red morocco doublures, marbled endpapers, gilt edges, double gilt fillets on leading edges, superb near-contemporary binding by P.R. Raparlier.
Work illustrated with 6 plates including 1 frontispiece by Lefebvre.
Some foxing mainly at the beginning of the volume.
