Half black shagreen binding, spine with four raised bands set with gilt dots and ornamented with triple black and gilt compartments, light rubbing to joints, blue paper boards, marbled endpapers and pastedowns, corners slightly bumped.
Autograph inscription signed by Xavier Marmier: "A Mr le Cte de Tourgueneff". X.M.", the "M" having been slightly trimmed by the binder.
Provenance: from the library of Count Tourgueneff with his bookplate pasted on a pastedown.
This refers either to Alexandre Tourgueneff, historian and specialist in the dissemination of holy scriptures, or to his brother Nicolas, pioneer of serf emancipation. Both, broad and liberal minds, sojourned in France at this time.
