Very rare first edition.

Green half basane contemporary binding, flat spines framed in gilt, gilt initials at the foot of the spines, marbled paper boards, marbled endpapers and pastedowns, speckled edges, discreet restoration to the spine-ends, contemporary bindings. Occasional foxing, mainly affecting the edges.

Extremely rare presentation copy in first edition, signed and inscribed by Hector Malot to Campbell Clarke, British journalist and noted collector of French literature.

No copy of this edition appears in the catalogues of French institutions.

Original colored drawing signed and dated by J. Descluseaux depicting Hector Malot full-length holding a pen in his right hand and a bundle of books in his left.
Drawing executed in pencil, blue and red ink.
This copy by J. Descluseaux is strongly inspired by, with some variations, André Gill's caricature of Hector Malot published in No. 116 of 1881.
In André Gill's drawing, Hector Malot's blouse is red (blue in Descluseaux's version), the pen yellow (colorless in the copy) and the bundle of books yellow (red in the Descluseaux).
The drawing is captioned Mr Hector Malot and J. Descluseaux 1882 in pencil.
