Né à Nancy (Meurthe-et-Moselle) et mort à Thorey (Meurthe-et-Moselle). Officier de cavalerie dans les colonies françaises (Algérie, Indochine, Madagascar, Maroc...). Lyautey fut élevé, en 1921, à la dignité de Maréchal de France. A partir de 1908, la carrière militaire de celui qu'on surnomma "l'Africain" fut essentiellement liée au nouveau protectorat français sur le Maroc, établi en 1912. Résident général de France au Maroc (1912-1925) et acteur principal du traité de Fès (1912), aux termes duquel le Maroc, État souverain, déléguait à la France ses droits régaliens. Chargé d'assurer l'organisation du protectorat de la France dans l'empire chérifien. Membre de l'Institut, Académie française (élu en 1912)
