    New edition of this ancient pastoral romance, illustrated with a frontispiece and eight full-page engravings. With several headpieces, decorated initials and tailpieces.

     

    Dark yellow morocco, spine with five raised bands, author, title and date lettered in gilt, gilt fillets to board edges and headcaps, gilt inner dentelle, all edges gilt; tan morocco case by Riviere & Son, spine with five raised bands, author, title and date lettered in gilt, blind-tooled fillets. Raised bands lightly rubbed, with a few scuffs to the slipcase, otherwise a handsome copy.

    Contemporary blue half morocco over marbled boards, smooth spine richly tooled in gilt within decorative compartments, gilt date at foot, gilt fillet border to the boards, comb-marbled endpapers and pastedowns, original wrappers preserved, top edge gilt, an attractive unsigned binding.

    This edition was revised and expanded by Paul-Louis Courier.

    Contemporary full tortoiseshell calf binding, smooth spine richly decorated with gilt rolls, tools and fillets as well as a red morocco title label, triple gilt fillet framing the boards, gilt roll on the leading edges, headcaps and framing the pastedowns, all edges gilt.
    Joints rubbed with small cracks.

    Half red morocco binding with corners, lightened spine with five thin raised bands set with black fillets decorated with double black compartments embellished with gilt arabesques, double gilt fillet frame on marbled paper boards, two angular scratches at foot of front board, marbled endpapers and pastedowns, top edge gilt, binding signed by Hering, binder in Strasbourg.
    Some foxing mainly at beginning and end of volume.

    New reprint of the so-called Regent edition, small quarto published in 1718. A frontispiece by Coypel and 29 figures of the Regent (Philippe d'Orléans) engraved by B. Audran. Some figures are folded. Translation by Amyot. This 1779 edition also appeared in quarto format with text pages in frames. The reprinted figures are before letters.
    Contemporary brown calf binding with scale pattern. Smooth spine decorated in grotesque style. Triple fillet frame on boards. Top headcap worn. Lower joint cracked at head. One corner bumped. Scattered foxing.
