Famous Chinese painter (1899-1983), calligrapher, he renewed traditional Chinese painting of flowers and birds using ancestral techniques; his art is very close to calligraphy through his brushwork and freedom of gesture. He was the best student of Qi Baishi. He taught painting at the Central Academy of Arts from 1950 until his death. Each painting bears the artist's red seal and a caption. Works by Li Kuchan regularly appear in international sales, especially in the United States.
