Mathématicien, artiste, géomètre astronome, hydrographe. Il professa l'astronomie et les mathématiques au Collège de France, fut reçu à l'Académie des sciences en 1678, coopéra à la Carte de France, et exécuta des nivellements pour amener des eaux à Versailles. Fils de Laurent de La Hyre (1605-1656) de l'Académie royale de peinture. Eut 3 fils : Gabriel-Philippe dit Philippe II de La Hire (1677-1719) médecin, astronome, membre de l'Académie royale d'architecture, Jean Nicolas de La Hire (1685-1728) médecin et botaniste, membre de l'Académie des sciences, Augustin de La Hire (1688-1744), ingénieur et inspecteur des Ponts et chaussées. Né et mort à Paris
