Born in Ouled Djellal in the Biskra region of Algeria, Koribaa Nabhani stands as one of the most distinctive voices in twentieth-century Algerian philosophy. After completing his secondary education in Algiers and Paris, he earned his doctorate at the Sorbonne in 1966 under the supervision of Gaston Bachelard, with a dissertation on the philosophy of aesthetics. During his years in Paris, he moved in the intellectual circles of Jean-Paul Sartre and André Gide, and studied under the renowned orientalist Louis Massignon. He was awarded the Prix des intellectuels français in 1952 and the Académie française poetry prize in 1954. Returning to Algeria, he taught philosophy at the University of Algiers until his death. The author of some ten works in French — among them Les Kharidjites, démocrates de l'Islam (1991) and Omar Khayyâm, messager de l'Iran universel (1988) — Nabhani devoted his intellectual life to a universalist humanism rooted in Arab-Islamic culture and open to cross-civilisational dialogue. He died on 9 November 2004, leaving a body of work that remains largely unrecognised outside Algeria.
