Heinrich Julius von Klaproth (1783–1835) was one of the most important Prussian orientalists of the early nineteenth century, specializing in Asian languages. Son of the chemist Martin Heinrich Klaproth, he participated in 1805 in the Russian embassy to China led by Yuri Golovkin, then conducted significant linguistic and ethnographic research in the Caucasus between 1807 and 1810 for the Imperial Academy of Sciences in St. Petersburg.
He settled in Paris in 1815, where he remained until his death. A major precursor of comparative Asian linguistics, he was among the first to propose a genealogical classification of Tibeto-Burman languages and contributed to the dissemination of the term "Indo-Germanic languages" (Indogermanische Sprachen in German), which was adopted and reformulated as "Indo-European" by Thomas Young as early as 1813.
His most celebrated work, Asia Polyglotta (1823–1831), stands as a foundational reference for the history of Asian language classification. He published over 300 works—books, memoirs, and articles—devoted notably to sinology, Caucasian languages, Japanese, Manchu, and Mongolian.
