The only general of the Second World War to have been elevated to the dignity of marshal during his lifetime, Alphonse Juin was one of the great leaders of the Liberation Army in 1944-1945 and distinguished himself throughout the Italian campaign at the head of the French expeditionary corps, notably at the Battle of Garigliano in May 1944, opening the gates of Rome to the Allies who had been bogged down before Monte Cassino.
