Orientaliste, élève de Silvestre de Sacy (1758-1838). Un des fondateurs de la Société de géographie et de la Société asiatique de France. Premier secrétaire et interprète de Napoléon Ier, lors de l'Expédition d'Égypte (1798-1799), il traduit les proclamations de l'Empereur en arabe. Maître des requêtes au Conseil d'État (nommé en 1810). Professeur de langue et de littérature persanes au Collège de France (1838). Directeur de l'École des langues orientales (à partir de 1838). Membre de l'Institut, Académie des inscriptions et belles-lettres, section des Orientalistes (élu en 1830). Chevalier de l'Empire (en 1808). Pair de France (1841)

    Half olive-green calf, spine with four raised bands framed with gilt garlands and decorated with small blind-stamped floral tools, black morocco title and author labels, marbled paper boards, comb-marbled endpapers and pastedowns, modern binding.

    Restoration period half light brown sheep binding. Smooth spine decorated with fillets and tools; roulette at foot. Marbled edges. Rubbing to boards, but handsome copy with perfectly fresh paper.
